I was also a tad worried when it was decided to move from our legacy inhouse I.T system over to SAP but having being part of the migration process the stuff actually works rather well when done properly.

But the costs on the other hand ... 500 million rand and counting :(.

Of course it works. The upfront costs are just completely out of hand, and that is only the beginning. The real nasties are in the incalculable hours spent feeding data into the beast and the inevitable business processes that have to change to accommodate "the system".

I can understand the role of R3 in mega corporates, but trying to market B1 as small business friendly is just LOL.

I really prefer not to say Vlad as I have learned in the past with Current93 for example where some idiot besides getting his lawyers involved also emailed his employer over tiffs and vendetta's originating on CarToday.

Prefer to keep my professional and personal life apart thank you very much.

You know they have to compete there as well but thankfully Salesforce.com seems to be kicking their butts in that area.

Understood. Was curious because my wife's company recently did a few huge SAP implementations.

How many companies have increased their profits from installing SAP?

Is SAP actually enjoyable to work on?

We had SAP at EDS. From a user's point of view, it was loathsome - a crude system with a half-baked GUI that didn't seem to follow any GUI usability guidelines.

Garth, to be honest, the whole SAP implementation there is a fcuk up. Even though I was working on BW, I had to do work of the retail support guys just to keep things afloat. POSDM sucks. BW can't handle the data loads and r/3 is also a huge fcukup. Get in touch with the users and you will see how they hate the system, you are a bit disconnected.

I hate SAP that is why I left .

Firstly find out which modules are being offered. e.g. If you are in finance currently and would like continue in that field, SAP has a finance module.

SAP has a Warehouse, CRM, CMS, HR, Datawarehouse, Manufacturing and some other modules. You just need to decide which area you want to work in.

I'm currently in IT, but have a wide general knowledge and experience in business. Courses will start on 1 Feb 2010. Will most probable first do a full Administrator course, 5 weeks, R80k. Unless someone can give me better advice/direction on to which module I should do.

To sum it up: I have no idea where to start.

Oh, my bad. You want to get into the technical side of things .

Tech: ABAP development, Basis Administrators (like DBA's + Sys Admin), Authorizations, etc. etc.
